Make sure you know who is receiving the money, what the payment is for and that the item and seller have been properly checked before sending substantial funds.
Don't Rely on Screenshots
Screenshots, emails or messages can be altered. Sellers should check their own account for cleared funds, and buyers should independently verify payment details.
Different Purchases Need Different Checks
Touring Caravans
Look for damp, chassis condition, tyres, appliances, identification details and relevant paperwork.
Statics & Mobile Homes
Confirm whether the unit stays on-site or requires removal, along with dimensions, access and transport costs.
Vehicles & Trailers
Check identification, mechanical condition, MOT history where applicable, plated weights and ownership details.
Land, Yards & Sites
Verify ownership, boundaries, access, permitted use and planning position using appropriate professional advice.
Never Let a Seller Rush You
Statements such as “someone else is collecting it today”, “send the deposit now” or “the transporter is already booked” should not stop you carrying out reasonable checks. Missing out on one purchase is better than losing money to a bad one.
Get a Written Receipt
For significant private purchases, keep a clear record of what was bought, from whom and for how much.
